Her memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August14, 2012 at the United Church of Christ in Springfield. Inurnment will be held at Pioneer Cemetery, rural Avon. Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home of Springfield is in charge of the arrangements.

Alda Mae Ferwerda, daughter of Peter and Amelia (Dirks) Unruh, was born May 21, 1923 at Bloomfield, MT. She died Wednesday, August 8, 2012 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton. Alda attained the age of 89 years, two months and 19 days.

Alda graduated from Springfield High School in 1942. She married William (Bill) Ferwerda in Hartington, NE on December 16, 1942. Seven children were blessed to their union.

Alda was a member of the Springfield United Church of Christ. She was also a life member of the Dwight Wood American Legion Post #132 Auxiliary and the National Guard Enlisted Association Auxiliary.

Alda was a loving wife and mother who loved and enjoyed caring for her family, reading her Bible, Sewing, needle point, gardening and creating greeting cards on her computer.

Thankful for having shared her life are her husband of nearly 70 years, Bill Ferwerda of Springfield; her children: Lolita Oorlog of Waterville, MN; Lois Sandvick and Errol Mann of Missoula, MT; Cheri Worley and husband Floyd of Anchor Point, AK; Rick Ferwerda and wife Cheryl of Tyndall; Bill Ferwerda and wife Diane of Blooming Prairie, MN; Terry Ferwerda and wife Alice of Salt Lake City, UT; 12 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Alda was preceded in death by her son Jerry Ferwerda on February 17, 2006; her parents, brother Wallace Unruh; sister Donia Elva Talsma and her husband Ray; sister Delphia Unruh, at age four; and son-in-law, Myron Oorlog.
