Alvina Soukup

Alvina Soukup, 96, of Wagner passed away on Friday, October 24, 2008 at Avera Sister James Care Center in Yankton.

She was born June 8, 1912, in Geddes, SD. Her parents were Joseph and Emma (Rados) Slaba. She and her husband were married on November 20, 1939 and took up residence on the farm 13 miles south of Wagner. Alvina cared for their children and worked with E J on the farm until his death in 1967.

Alvina moved to an apartment in Wagner in 1972. Her skills as a baker were well known and there was always fresh bread, kolaches, or pie to be shared with visitors, friends, and family. She was also known for her embroidery skills and loved to play cards and games.

Alvina was devoted to the church and was active in Catholic Daughters, Catholic Workman, and Alter Society. She received awards for 50 years of membership in Catholic Workman. and Catholic Daughters.

Alvina is survived by her children, James and his wife Shirley of Sioux City; Edward and his wife Therese of Wagner, and Ann and her husband Galen Jordre of Pierre. She had eight grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Mary Rezac of Dante, two sisters-in-law: Viola Soukup of Wagner and Theresa Slaba of Geddes, and many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death was her husband E J Soukup; her parents; brothers Oscar, Charlie; twin Alvin Slaba; and infant sister Maggie.

Funeral mass will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, October 27, 2008 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Wagner. Catholic Daughters will lead a rosary one-half hour prior to the funeral mass. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation is from 11 am to 5 pm on Sunday, October 26, 2008 at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home in Wagner, followed by a rosary and scripture service at 7 pm, at the church. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.

The officiant for the service will be Father Richard Baumberger, and the pall bearers will be her grandchildren Jody Hagaman, Rick Soukup, Stacy Gutierrez, Andy Soukup, Dean Soukup, Linda Turner, John Jordre, and Mary Jensen. Honorary pallbearers are great grandchildren Zachary and Amanda Hagaman, Nathan and Katie Soukup, Megan Gutierrez, Dallin and Lily Soukup, Ashley and Nicole Turner, and Nina and Wilson Jordre.
