Anna Koupal, 99 of Wagner
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 2, 2012 at St. John Catholic Church in Wagner, with burial in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home in Wagner, followed by a 7:00 p.m. Rosary/Wake at the church.
Anna Elizabeth Ellen Koupal was born October 27, 1912 in Wagner, South Dakota, the daughter of John and Elizabeth (Soukup) Slaba. She died Friday, March 30, 2012 at the Good Samaritan Society in Wagner. Anna attained the age of 99 years, five months and three days.
Anna attended rural school through the eighth grade. She then worked to help her family of three sisters and four brothers. Anna helped raise many children from the Wagner area. She was an available and willing baby sitter.
Anna married Joseph T. Koupal on June 12, 1934 at Wagner, SD. Together they farmed on the southeast corner of Wagner, raising sheep and chickens. Together they raised three wonderful daughters. Anna also worked many years at the Spot Cafe. In 1969, they moved to Yankton where she worked at the golf course. They returned to Wagner in May of 1998 and moved into the Heritage Court. Joe died on January 18, 2000. Anna moved into the Wagner Good Samaritan Center in August of 2000, where she lived in her later years, enjoying bingo, diet pop and candy.
Anna was a faithful member of St. John Catholic Church and a great believer in prayer. She enjoyed baking bread and cookies, visiting with friends, dancing, playing cards and her grandchildren. Anna will always be remembered for her generous and caring nature and serving others. In her later years, Anna's expression of "oh, go on" will be remembered by quite a few citizens in Wagner.
Thankful for having shared her life are her three daughters: Janis and husband Wilbur Nedved of Wagner; JoAnn and husband Richard Sadler of Buda, TX; and Marlene Isburg of Spearfish; nine grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Anna was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Joe; infant son, Michael; parents; three sisters: Clara Pavlis; Helen Pavlis and Rosie Kocmich; and four brothers: Jim; Louis; Joe and John Slaba.
