Arlon "Bud" McNeely, 84 of Springfield
Memorial Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 19, 2016 at the United Church of Christ in Springfield, with inurnment in the Trinity Presbyterian Cemetery, rural Avon, with military honors. Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home in Springfield is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be directed to LifeScape in SIoux Falls (formerly Children's Care Hospital & SD Achieve).
Arlon Duane "Bud" McNeely was born April 19, 1931 in rural Avon, SD, the son of Hugh and Gloria (Ward) McNeely. He died Friday, April 15, 2016 at his home in Springfield.
Bud graduated from Springfield High School in 1949. He graduated from Southern State Teachers College in Springfield and obtained his Masters Degree from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion. Bud and his brother Wendell both drove bus for the family business, Springfield Bus Lines, while their father served in the Pacific during World War II, as well as during the post War years.
Bud was united in marriage to Marilyn J. McKechnie on October 18, 1952 in Sioux Falls.
Bud served in the US Army in Japan during the Korean Conflict. He retired as Sgt. Major from the SD National Guard after 30 years of military service. His last assignment was at the Pentagon in Washington, DC.
Bud enjoyed being an educator and school administrator for many years in many small communities, mostly along the Missouri River.
Bud was active in the Boy Scouts, achieving the rank of Eagle Scout, enjoying numerous canoe trips and later being a Boy Scout summer camp counselor. He will be remembered for his love of golfing, fishing, hunting, reading westerns and feeding birds. He was very proud of his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Bud was so thrilled to meet the four month old twin great grandsons from Yuma, Arizona before his passing. After a lifetime of teaching school, school administration and military service, Bud retired to Springfield, his family home town, where he grew up.
Thankful for having shared his life are his wife Marilyn of Springfield; two sons: Guy and wife Carleen of Yankton and Jay of Springfield; four grandkids: Alex, Kathryn, Jesse McNeely and Misty Lindgren; three great grandkids: Ethan, Jacob and Lucas McNeely; sister Jean Becker of Wagner; and many nieces and nephews.
Bud was preceded in death by his parents, two adult brothers: Wendell and Don, two infant brothers Roger and James, and one infant sister, Marilyn.
