Caroline Dion, 64 of Lake Andes
Her funeral service was 10:00 a.m Thursday, October 5, 2017 at the Native American Church in rural Wagner, with burial in the Native American Cemetery. Visitation was at White Swan Community Center on Tuesday in Lake Andes and then at the Joe Abdo, Sr. home on Wednesday.
Caroline Mae (Abdo) Dion was born June 23, 1953 at home in Snake Creek to Joseph N. Abdo Sr. and Beulah June Trudell Abdo. Caroline died at home October 1, 2017 under hospice care. Hoppa is 7th generation to Chief Smutty Bear. Growing up Caroline lived in various places, however after her union with Lorenzo Lee Dion Sr. on January 1, 1971, she settled in Lake Andes most of her life. To this union came their children: Josette Caple, Shelly Saunsoci, Samantha Dion, Lorenzo Dion Jr., and Sabra Dion.
As a loving mother she opened up her hom eand raised many nieces/nephews as her sons/daughters: Tara Roan Eagle, Cindy Schunk, Jewel Brewer, Allison Abdo, Jodi Dion, Anita Horned Eagle, Larry Abdo Jr, Josh Abdo, Eric Abdo, Joe Abdo III, Sam Abdo and Aaron Abdo.
Throughout her life, she worked at the Group Home in Marty and later woeked in the cage for the Fort Randall Casino. She retired in 2004 and enjoyed life with her children and grandchildren. Caroline loved her arts and crafts. She loved doing beadwork and painting knickknacks. Also she loved to sew. One important aspect of her way of life was the Yankton Sioux Crossfire teachings of the Native American Church. For many years, Caroline and her companion were called upon to render prayers on behalf of many relatives. Caroline was a well respected woman in the four directions. Caroline was known to be classy, modest, charismatic, loving and generous. Our Big Mom was so phenomenal and beautiful in her dresses and heels.
Caroline was preceded in death by her soul mate Lorenzo; son Bubbs; mother Beulah, father Joseph; brothers Larry and Mike; nephews Eric and PeeWee; grandmothers Lorraine Stricker and Nancy St. Pierre Trudell; and grandfathers Joe Abdo and Levi Trudell.
She is survived by her daughters: Josette, Shelly, Smantha and Sabra; brothers and sisters: Joseph Abdo Jr, Shirley Arrow, Robert Abdo Sr., Joan Roan Eagle, Lori Abdo Smith, John Abdo Sr., Niomi Primeaux, Lorraine Tsosi, Lisa Abdo and James Abdo Sr.
