Carolyn Marie Thaler was born on October 21, 1924 to Joseph and Marie (Slapak) Thaler on a farm near Tabor, SD. She passed away April 16, 2023 at the Good Samaritan Center in Scotland, SD. She attained the age of 98 years, 5 months and 26 days.

Carolyn lived on various farms in Bon Homme County for the majority of her life. She loved animals, so living on a farm suited her well. When her mother, Marie, passed away suddenly in 1958, Carolyn assumed the role as homemaker and caretaker. She did household and farm chores alongside her father. Together they raised chickens, pigs, cows and cats. They milked cows, butchered chickens and pigs, sold eggs and cream, and Carolyn fed cats! She fed lots of cats; therefore, she was affectionately referred to as, "the crazy cat lady." Carolyn found humor in this title and many cats benefited from her caring nature.

Carolyn lovingly cared for her father until his death in 199l. After his death, she moved into an apartment in Scotland, and for the first time Carolyn had running water and flushing toilets in her home! She was elated. She was designated as site manager for the apartment building for many years of her residency; an assignment she took very seriously.

Carolyn loved music. She taught herself how to play the guitar as she sang. Carolyn was not shy around a microphone; she loved to entertain. She and her brother, Joseph Eugene (Gene), were a talented singing duo. They sang on local radio stations and at community events. Carolyn sang in church and community choirs. She sang and played with the Happy Memories Band throughout the years and spoke fondly of the friendships formed in that group. Carolyn was proud of her musical talent. She willingly shared her ability to play guitar and harmonize with most anyone.

Carolyn kept abreast of all political and current events and educated herself about personal well-being. She loved baking, car-racing, rodeos and sporting events. Her sense of humor and her musical talent were admirable. The wealth of Bon Homme County and Thaler family history that Carolyn held was remarkable. Consequently, she had a respected ability to hold her own in any conversation.

Carolyn was a member of the St. George Catholic Church and volunteered in many church and community organizations and fundraisers. Carolyn loved to write! She documented everything! Hence, she was often elected as secretary in the organizations. She was proud when people complimented her writing. Carolyn loved 'her' community of Scotland and promoted and supported hometown business.

Family was truly Carolyn's pride and joy. She reminisced warm-heartedly about those of the past. She and her father attended many family events with her brother, Gene, his wife, Alice and their children. Carolyn loved to attend family reunions and talk about family history. Her family memories were documented with photographs and journals. She was the fundamental keeper of Thaler family history.

Welcoming her into her heavenly home were: her Lord and Savior, her parents, Joe and Marie, her brother, Gene, her sister-in-law, Alice, and many other relatives and friends. She was the beloved aunt of survivors: Patrick (Cathy), Daniel (Becky), Paul (Karen), Steve and Susan. Survivors also include great and great-great nephews and nieces. She will fondly be remembered for her sweet simple soul and loving kindness.
