Charles Oliver, 88, of Avon
Services will be 10:00 AM, Thursday, May 21, 2009 at Zion Lutheran Church in Avon, SD with Pastor Ken Johnson officiating. Burial will be at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 PM to 7 PM at the Crosby-Jaeger funeral chapel in Avon.
Charles Edwin Oliver was born March 14, 1921 in rural Charles Mix County, South Dakota to Arthur and Laura (Watwood) Oliver. As a child he attended rural grade schools southwest of Avon and as a young adult he graduated from Avon High School in 1941. On September 8, 1944 he was united in Holy Matrimony to Mae Elizabeth Brandt. "Mae and Charlie" as they were affectionately known raised two children, Larry and Lucinda.
Charlie lived and worked in and around the community of Avon his entire life. Before he retired, Charlie worked for the Bon Homme County road department most of his adult life plowing snow in the winter and grading roads in the summer. Mae and Charlie faithfully attended Zion Lutheran Church in Avon during their nearly 60 years of marriage.
A Lifetime member of American Legion Post, he and Mae volunteered for the Legion and Legion Auxiliary, Zion Lutheran Church and were active in the restoration of several small cemetaries around Bon Homme County. In the winter they made many beautiful quilts.
Charlie died May 15, 2009 at the age of 88 after several months of declining health.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mae in 2004. He is survived by sisters Erma Powers, Wagner, SD and Lois Sattler Avon, SD; son Larry Oliver of Corvallis, OR; daughter Lucinda Selzler of Coweta, OK; four grandchildren, Dean Selzler of Seoul, South Korea; CariAnn Oliver-Belanger, Bend, OR; Leah (Selzler) Havlik, Coweta, OK; Richard Selzler of Coweta, OK and three great grandchildren.
Charlie went to Heaven to be with the Lord and Mae on May 15, 2009 after several months of declining health.
