Clara Hornstra, 101, of Tyndall

Funeral Services will be 1:30 PM, Friday, June 23, 2017 at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home in Springfield. Burial is in the Pioneer Cemetery, rural Springfield. Visitation is the hour prior to services on Friday, from 12:30 to 1:30, at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home in Springfield.

Clara Agnes Hornstra was born July 12, 1915 at Mott, ND, the daughter of Charles and Emma (Wasson) Higgins. She died Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton.

The family moved to Faith and lived there until she was six years old. They then moved to Springfield, where she attended grade school and high school. Clara attended one year of college at Southern Normal in Springfield. She taught school briefly and also worked as a grocery store clerk and bookkeeper. She married Gerrit "Barney" Hornstra on June 12, 1939 at Hyanis, NE. Together they farmed west of Springfield. Barney died on January 1, 1977. She stayed on the farm until moving to Sturgis to be near family in 1988 and then back to Avon in March of 2001. She moved to Tyndall in July of 2004.

Clara will be remembered for her love of knitting, crocheting, traveling, and her love of playing Canasta.

Thankful for having shared her life are her special family, Merle and the late Shirley Talsma of Gregory; Tim (Cindy) Talsma of Iona and their two children, Kayla (Curtis) Begeman and their daughter Alice, and Tanya (Tucker) Whitney; Keith (Maria) Talsma of Iona and their children, Jennifer Talsma, Kevin (Amber) Talsma and their children: Michael Janis, Summer Janis, Lana, Jerrit, Jabin and Elli Talsma; Sherri (Lucky) Wynia and their children, Saddi Wynia and Kole (fiance Elizabeth) Wynia; sister-in-law, Letty Higgins of Mandan, ND; and many special nieces and nephews.

Clara was preceded in death by her husband Barney; special friend, who she considered as her daughter, Shirley Talsma; brother William Higgins; and sisters: Daina Dunbar, Julia Bradley and Laura Bradley.
