Clarence Glen "Shorty" Halsey, age 97, of Springfield

Funeral services will be 10:00 AM, Saturday, August 17, 2019 at Calvary Baptist Church in Yankton with lunch to follow. Burial is in Springfield Cemetery with Military Honors. Visitation is Friday from 4 to 6 PM at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home in Springfield.

Clarence Glen Halsey was born on in rural Springfield on January 5, 1922, the son of Clarence Bayard and Elizabeth "Bessie" (Kellogg) Halsey. He died Tuesday, August 13, 2019 at the Good Samaritan Society in Tyndall.

Shorty attended rural Springfield schools through eighth grade. He worked as a farm hand and owned a trucking business. When the US joined the allied war effort, Shorty attempted to enlist but was rejected by four branches of the military due to an eye problem. He was called up in the spring of 1945 and was honorably discharged in November of 1946.

Shorty was united in marriage to Sarah "Sally" Hofer on July 27, 1944. He and Sarah farmed west of Springfield, and later operated Halsey Dirt Moving. Following the sale of his business, Glen worked with the Bon Homme County Conservation District, retiring at 84. Glen and Sarah lived on their farm into their nineties, then moved to Springfield Assisted Living Center, and later Tyndall's Good Samaritan Society.

Shorty was a devoted Christian, husband, father and grandfather who will be remembered for his faith and service to God, love for Sarah and their family, and loyalty to friends.  He had passion for memorizing scripture, lyrics and poetry, as well as riding his Harley.

He will be missed by daughters Connie Ferdig of Yankton, Janice Bailey of Huntsville, AL, and Nancy Nagel of Trumbull, CT, 12 grandchildren, and many great- and great-great grandchildren. He is survived by brother-in-law Glenn Barnes, sister-in-law Wilma Halsey, sister-in-law Marilyn Halsey, and sister-in-law Dorothy Preheim. Shorty was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sarah, son-in-law Jan Nagel; brother Lloyd and wife Joyce Halsey, sister Rusty and husband Robert DeRoos, sister Joyce Barnes, and brother Tuffy Halsey.
