Obituary

Cordelia Meyer, 95, of Wagner

On June 20, 2016, Cordelia Ruth (Hahn) Meyer came to the end of her earthly journey and went to be with her Lord and Savior as well as all her loved ones who passed before her. She died at the Wagner Community Memorial Hospital Avera. Her funeral will be held on Saturday, June 25, 2016 at 11:00 am at St. John Lutheran Church, Wagner, SD, with services conducted by Rev. Jordon Andreasen. Visitation will be held at Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home on Friday, June 24th, from 6 pm to 8 pm with prayer service at 7 pm, then again for an hour prior to the funeral services at the church. Interment will be at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Armour, SD.

Cordelia was born on August 23, 1920, to Emil and Friedericka (Klein) Hahn on the family homestead south of Delmont in Charles Mix Co. As the oldest of seven children, she was expected to tend to the younger siblings and this nature of caring for and doing things for others continued her entire life. Cordelia could be counted on to provide anything from comfort to joy, depending upon the situation, and was known by all for her calm dignity, kindness, class and quick-witted humor.

She was baptized at the St. Paul's Lutheran church south of Delmont on September 19, 1920 and her sponsors were a maternal Aunt Elisabeth (Klein) Denke and Elizabeth Hahn, wife of paternal Uncle Emmanuel. Her early years of schooling were in German at the St. Paul parochial school and she completed 8th grade at Choteau Creek #3 country school. She was confirmed in German on March 25, 1934, by Rev. H.T. Schmidt.

She and Reuben Meyer were united in marriage on February 20, 1941 at the Lutheran parsonage by Rev. L.J. Fuchs. Witnesses were Lotar Hahn and Agnes Hahn. They farmed south of Delmont where they raised their three children. She was a self-taught organist/piano player and for many years, she played at the Bethany Reformed Church in Delmont where she was also a Sunday School teacher. For around four decades until she was in her early 80's, she was employed caring for others – For several years at the Armour Douglas County Memorial Hospital, then for twenty-nine years at Wagner Good Samaritan Center.

After they moved off the farm and into Wagner, she and Reuben became members of St. John Lutheran Church in Wagner. A short time after Reuben died on February 5, 2001, she moved to Westside Estates in south Wagner. She so enjoyed her many friends there and being part of that community.

Cordelia loved to visit family, friends, and neighbors. In addition to helping on the farm, she was always busy sewing, crocheting, quilting, making crafts, baking, gardening, and canning. She was a life-long reader and enjoyed bowling, playing cards, watching baseball, and traveling.

Thankful for her love and care are her children: Roger Meyer of Valley Center, CA, Cynthia and Jim Filips of Yankton, and Ronda and Robert Gusinsky of Rapid City; Grandchildren: Steven Filips, Deana Meyer, David Filips, Jon Meyer (Andrea Tao), Dane and Colleen Oman, and Tanner Oman (Jami Kuchenbecker); Great-grandchildren: Taber Oman and Isabella Filips. She is also survived by sisters, Agnes (Ray) Stoebner, Gladys (Elmer) Schamber, and Inez Cotton, all of Sioux Falls as well as a sister-in-law, Thelma Meyer of Armour and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, daughter-in-law, Donna Meyer, sister Carol (Hahn) Keller and brothers, Lotar and Jerold Hahn.

Memorials may be directed to her beloved St. John Lutheran Church or Wagner Community Memorial Hospital - Avera.
