Obituary

Cynthia Lea Haenfler, 73, of Mesa, AZ, formerly of Avon

Funeral services will be 10:30 AM, Friday, August 9, 2024 at Zion Lutheran Church in Avon, SD. Burial will be in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery, rural Avon. Peters Funeral Chapel of Avon is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers memorials will to be directed to View Point Choraliers Choir that Cynthia participated in c/o Jean Hemmen #4804 650 N Hawes Rd. Mesa, AZ 85207


Cynthia was born on June 6, 1951 to Gerald and Laval-Mae (Vesper) Haenfler in Wagner, SD. She died Tuesday, July 23, 2024 at Mountain Vista Medical Center in Mesa, AZ. She attended rural Rueb and Mennonite School. In 1969, she graduated from Avon High School. Cynthia had perfect attendance all 12 grades. After 5 years of college at South Dakota State University, Cynthia received her degree for Pharmacy in 1974.

Cynthia began working at age 12 in the Flower Shop for Ada Mensch. She then got the prime job in Avon as the soda jerk for George Ulrich, then Otto and Margaret Poppe at the drug store from 1967-1969. She worked as a pharmacist from 1974 to 1991 at the Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls. In 1992, she worked at the Indian Health Service as a contract pharmacist. In 2010 she retired and began wintering in Mesa, AZ.

She belonged to the Zion Lutheran Church in Avon and the Hosanna Lutheran Church in Mesa, AZ. Cynthia enjoyed photography, antiquing, golf, pinochle, and traveling. She also loved her crosswords, puzzles, reading mysteries, singing and playing guitar. She was the voice of the Avon Bards Baseball Team for several years.

Cynthia is survived by her brother Duane (Carolyn) Haenfler of Rapid City, SD; nephews Ross (Jennifer) Haenfler of Grinnell, IA and Brad Haenfler of Rapid City, SD; nieces Shawn (Morey) Trupe, Stacey Hazelton, and Kelly (Brett) Soderlin of Rapid City; great nieces River and Wren; and many cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and infant sisters Cheryl and Carol.
