Ellsworth Wayne Chytka, a proud member of the Yankton Sioux Tribe began his journey to the spirit world on May 5, 2026 at the age of 78 at Douglas County Memorial Hospital, Armour SD after a lengthy illness.

He was born at St Luke's Hospital in Sioux City,Iowa to Thomas Vance Chytka and Agnes Amelia Kitteaux on October 12, 1947. Ellsworth was a man deeply rooted in his heritage, carrying forward the traditions, strength and resilience of his people. He lived his life guided by the values of family, respect, and connection to the land. He was known for his qualities of kindness, strength, humor, wisdom and for the way he showed up for those he loved.

Above all, he was a devoted father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, brother and family man. He taught by example-through quiet strength, hard work, and unwavering love. The lessons he passed on will continue to live in the hearts he leaves behind.

Ellsworth dedicated his life to his family through work, and will be remembered for helping others, story telling, craftsmanship and advocacy of Mother Earth, nature and for world peace. His presence was a steady force, and his legacy is one of endurance, care and pride in his identity and family.

Ellsworth is survived by the mothers of his children, his spouse, D’Este Chytka, his rock, Lois Chytka, Gloria Hamilton and Sheila Payne; his children: Emilia Chytka (Wade Rassmusen), Luke Madson (Gina), Theresa Bennett (William III), Jason Chytka, Thom Chytka, Will Chytka (Danielle), Clinton Payne, Sage Chytka (Shanna), Jesse Payne (Geneva), Rachael Gunhammer (Paige), Isaac Chytka (Ivy) and Cybil (Jesse); 31 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; his brother, Linsy Nelson (Shelly St Pierre); nieces Denise Brooks (John) and Renae Gasper; his Primary provider whom he thought the world of, Melody Otte; and his “adopted daughter” Sara Wright; as well as many relatives; and friends from all over the world that he had influenced during his teachings as an international speaker that will carry his memory forward.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Catherine and Emma Anne, brother Baby boy, nephew Todd, numerous relatives, friends and animals whom he was patiently waiting to be reunited with once again.

Traditional services will be held at his homestead in Lake Andes, honoring his life in accordance with the customs and spirit of his people.

As he journeys onward, we take comfort in knowing he walks with his ancestors. His spirit remains in the wind, the earth, and in all of those who loved him.

You walked alongside him with dignity and respect, right up to his final breath and even beyond. Your hands did more than provide care-they carried comfort, your presence brought peace, and your hearts honored his spirit. In those sacred moments, you helped guide him gently on his journey, ensuring his wishes were respected and his path was eased. Our family will always carry a deep gratitude for the way you cared for him-not just as a patient, but as a person, as a spirit, as someone deeply loved.
