Francis Lucas "Frenchy" Wood was born on March 7, 1941. He was born in rural Marty, SD to Logan Spider-Wood. He grew up in Marty with six brothers and six sisters, of which he was the youngest. He was baptized in the Catholic Church in Marty. Frank was a firm believer in Jesus Christ. He attended school at St. Paul's Indian Mission from 1948-1958.

Francis married Cleo F. Zephier on December 5, 1969. Born to this marriage were three children: Collette (Zephier) LaMotte of Wagner, SD; Justine Wood of Mitchell, SD; and Deron Wood of Sioux Falls, SD. Francis had three stepchildren: Armantha; Roma and Cameron. Francis had nine grandchildren (one of which he raised as his own - Chessa Zephier) and nine great grandchildren.

Frenchy was always very active in football and basketball in sports at school. He enjoyed basketball the most, even into his adult life and gave himself the name "The Legend". He was one to organize basketball tournaments and football pooles; this enabled the youth to stay positive in their own lives.

Frenchy was also a very talented artist and writer (poetry). In the early 70's he relocated to Denver, CO where he was employed at a printing company. Upon returning to the area he was always requested to do many hand painted signs for the YST campaign candidates and local merchants business billboards in the late 70's and early 80's.

In the late 80's Frenchy entered the "Halfway House" where he worked his way up to the House Manager at the program. He was a big influence on others who were recovering a the program.

Frenchy loved visiting his only surviving sister, Katherine (Wood) Honomichl and her fourteen children, as he and his sister were both fluent Dakota speakers. He spent a lot of time hiking, drawing, writing poetry and especially just enjoyed being outdoors.

Frenchy will be dearly missed for his unique sense of humor and his genuinely big heart.
