Obituary

George A. Herrold, 80 of Lake Andes

His funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 3, 2014 at the First Lutheran Church in Lake Andes, with burial in the Lakeview Cemetery, rural Lake Andes. Visitation will be at the church on Tuesday from 5:30 to 7:00, with the family present.

George Arthur Herrold, son of Dwight L. and Josephine (Barton) Herrold, was born September 18, 1933 at Plankinton, SD. He died peacefully Sunday, August 31, 2014 at St. Benedict Health Center in Parkston, SD. George attained the age of 80 years, 11 months and 14 days.

George attended elementary school in Plankinton and high school in Pickstown. As a young boy, he helped his Dad at the garage. and then moved to Pickstown where he worked on the Ft. Randall Dam. George served in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1958. He also worked at Dwight's Garage, did custom harvesting and worked for Herrold Implement. Most of all, George was a farmer, beloved husband and great Dad.

George married Karen Nelson on May 14, 1960 at the First Lutheran Church in Lake Andes. Five children were blessed to their union.

George was a member of the First Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council. He also was a member of RCWD, SCWD, and the Lake Andes Fire Department for 40 years, where he served as chief for many years.

George will be remembered for his joy of racing cars, hunting, attending sporting events, and going for Sunday drives. He especially loved his family, friends and food.

Thankful for having shared his life are his wife of 54 years, Karen of Lake Andes; his children: David and wife, Diane of Lake Andes; Debbie Thompson and husband Jeff of Avon; Vicki Jo Koupal and husband Terry of Wagner; Rick of Dimock; and Mary Kay Herrold of Canton; ten grandchildren; three great grandchildren; brother, Jim E. and wife Sally of Pickstown; sister Janice Scott and husband George of White Lake; and brother-in-law, Red Allen of Lake Andes; and many relatives and friends.

George was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Gladys Allen and two nephews: Tim and Jim Scott.
