Mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 1, 2017 at St. Vincent Catholic Church in Springfield, with burial in the parish cemetery, rural Springfield. Visitation will be held 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, July 31st at Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home in Springfield, followed by a 7:00 p.m. wake service.
Gladys Alberta "Sue" Luke-Ripple, daughter of Louis and Frances (Pompy) Cedeno, was born September 27, 1928 in Sioux City, IA. She died peacefully at the Tyndall Good Samaritan Center on Friday, July 28, 2017. Sue attained the age of 88 years, 10 months and 29 days.
Sue spent her early years with her Uncle Case and Aunt Dora Knoll, who helped raise her on their farm in rural Avon. Sue later moved to Juneau, AK to live with her mother and step father, Ted Schmaltz. She attended school in Avon and Juneau. Sue then attended college at Southern State Teachers College in Springfield.
Sue married Norris Arthur Luke on August 31, 1946. They were blessed with five sons: Michael Norris, Thomas Steven, James Theodore, Steven Case, and Robert Dean. Norris passed away on Thursday, August 19, 1982. On August 7, 1987, Sue remarried John F. Ripple. He passed away August 5, 2001.
While raising her sons, Sue babysat in her home. She also worked at M-Tron in Yankton for six years and at CR Industries in Springfield for 18 years. While with CR, she served as the Union Secretary for 17 years.
Sue enjoyed playing pinochle, Scrabble and other games with family and friends. She made sure all the grandchildren were included in learning and playing cards. Sue also enjoyed word search puzzles and reading books.
Sue was a member of St. Vincent Catholic Church in Springfield and Altar Society. She became an Extraordinary Minister of the Holy Eucharist on September 7, 1979. Sue was a past officer and life time member of the Springfield Historical Museum. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Springfield Extension Club and Red Hats Society.
Thankful for having shared her life are four sons: Tom and wife Connie of Springfield; Jim and wife Jodie of Puyallup, WA; Steve of Huron; and Bob and wife Kim of independence, MO; 13 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and former daughter-in-law, Dorothy Dean of Springfield.
Sue was preceded in death by her husbands; son, Michael; and grandson, Chase Arthur Luke.
