Harold Dean Miller, 93, of Lake Andes

Funeral services will be 11 AM, Monday, January 29, 2024 at The Church of the Epiphany Catholic Church in Epiphany, SD. Burial will be in the Holy Three Kings Epiphany Cemetery with military honors. Visitation will be 3-4 PM, Sunday, January 28, 2024 at St. Marks Catholic Church in Lake Andes with a Rosary/Wake service at 4 PM. Visitation will continue an hour prior to funeral services in Epiphany, SD.

Harold Dean Miller was born September 9, 1930, in Canova, SD, the son of Vernon and Velva (Bunce) Miller. He died Tuesday, January 23rd, 2024 at the Senior Living Center in Lake Andes, SD. Harold attained the age of 93 years, 4 months and 14 days.

Harold married Anita Sieverding Peppmuller on June 19,1956 in Epiphany. They lived in Idaho for a year and a half and then moved to Canova, SD where they lived for 33 years. Harold and his wife Anita were very involved in their community. They retired and moved to Lake Andes in 1993, where Harold enjoyed his retirement to the fullest. Harold became a resident of the Senior Living Center on December 1, 2022.

He graduated from school in Canova, SD.  After graduation he worked as a concrete-block masonry layer for Fred White and then went on to attend telegraphy school in Salt Lake City, UT. Harold was enlisted in the Marines in 1951 and fought in the Korean war.  Upon returning home from his military service, he worked various jobs throughout his life. He farmed with his father in the Canova area, and worked as a plumber for Garrett Callies. After he was married, they moved to Idaho where he worked in Bunker Hill Mine in Kellogg, ID. Upon returning to SD he worked in the elevator at Unityville and then later became the Manager of the Canova Farmers Elevator for many years before retiring and moving to Lake Andes. He also had a hobby farm that he spent many hours at tending to his cattle.

Harold will be remembered for his obsession to visit with any type of people, young or old!  He had a passion for working in the yard, tending to flowers, growing/harvesting a garden, and decorating the yard with holiday lawn ornaments.  He loved sports and was very active in playing golf, bowling, fishing with his buddies, playing cards, and hosting a good game of poker. He especially enjoyed playing baseball throughout the years with his brothers/relatives known today as the "Canova Gang"!  He was also so proud of the team of young kids that he coached in Lake Andes. He loved entertaining company, especially when the grandkids came to visit as he thought he could probably teach them a thing or two whether it was showing them by example, or just giving some good advice!  Harold was always willing to help in the community and church by volunteering for many projects.

Harold is survived by his three children: Vickie Brewer, Cindy Mengenhauser and Mike Miller all of Lake Andes; 11 granddaughters; 25 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great grandchildren; and brother Ronnie Miller.

Harold was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son Mark Allen; son-in-law Mark Mengenhauser; 5 great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; three brothers; and two sisters.
