Harriett Holcomb, 94, of Lake Andes

Memorial services are 2 PM, Thursday, July 14, 2011 at the First Presbyterian Church in Lake Andes. Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home in Wagner is in charge of arrangements. Burial will be 2 PM, Monday, July 18, 2011 in the Greenwood Cemetery in Brookings.

Harriett V. Holcomb was born December 13, 1916 in Alta, IA to Frank and Alma (Johnson) Nelson. She died Saturday, July 9, 2011 at Avera St. Benedict Health Center in Parkston, SD. She attained the age of 94 years, six months and 26 days.

Harriett's family lived in several towns in Iowa before moving to Watertown, SD. She graduated from Watertown High School and attended Watertown Business College. The family later moved to Brookings, SD, where she met Robert F. Holcomb. They were married in Painsville, OH on February 9, 1939 and later moved to Aberdeen, SD. Lt. Holcomb was killed while stationed in Colorado. Harriett moved back to Brookings, SD and worked in the Northwestern Bank for eight years. She then moved to Spokane, WA and worked in a bank there before moving to Lake Andes, SD in September of 1957. She owned and operated the Hotel Andes for 25 years. She also did part-time bookkeeping for several businesses including the Lake Andes and Wagner-Lake Andes Ambulance for 14 years, Randall Hills Country Club for 25 years and had been the Lake Andes City Auditor for six years.

She was a member and Elder of the First Presbyterian Church in Lake Andes and the treasurer for many years. She was also a member of Eastern Star Chapter #112, VFW Auxiliary, Randall Hills Country Club and the "Red Hatters".

Thankful for having shared her life are her daughter, Patricia and husband Lewis Dillon of Lake Andes; three grandchildren: Robert and wife Cathy Dillon of Watertown, John and wife Lisa Dillon of Mulvane, KS, and Virginia and husband Alan Abdo of Lake Andes; nine great grandchildren; one sister, Marjorie Elkins of Watertown; one brother, John and wife Elizabeth Nelson of Arlington; and many nieces and nephews.

Harriett was preceded in death by her husband on March 19, 1945 and her parents.

In lieu of flowers, memorials will be directed to the Union Gospel Mission, 701 E 8th St., Sioux Falls, SD 57103-1632.
