Harvey P. Weisser, 74 of Wagner
Harvey died unexpectedly Thursday, October 7, 2010 at the Wagner Community Memorial Hospital. His funeral service will be 2 P.M. Monday, October 11, 2010 at St. John Lutheran Church in Wagner, with burial in the ZCBJ Cemetery, rural Wagner. Visitation will be at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home in Wagner Sunday from 11 am to 5 pm, followed by a 7 pm prayer service at the church.
Harvey Paul Weisser was born on a farm near Tripp, SD, on January 31, 1936, the son of Paul and Viola (Herr) Weisser. Viola died from complications from childbirth. He was raised by his father Paul and stepmother Louise Weisser.
Harvey attended school through the eighth grade. He served his country in the Army National Guard.
Harvey married Darlene G. Permann on November 17, 1957 at the Friedens Reformed Church in Tripp. Five children were born to their union.
Harvey worked as a farmhand for Walt Kleinlein and his wife Louise near Delmont. He worked at Standard Oil in Tripp, SD for Bill Bertram. They moved to Wagner in 1959 with Bill to work at Standard Oil. He later worked for Co-op. In January of 1978, he bought Champlin bulk business from Jack Hennies, which became known as Weisser Oil Company and worked with his family until the present.
Harvey was a member of St. John Lutheran Church and served on several church boards. He had served on the Wagner City Council, Soil Conservation District Board, Chamber of Commerce, Rotary, National Guard Employer Support Advisory Board, Wagner Area Growth, Labor Day Committee, Good Samaritan Center Board, American Legion Greer Post #11 and as treasurer of the Twin Rivers Old Iron Association.
Harvey will be remembered for his love of old tractor restoration and collecting and was a car enthusiast. He also enjoyed bowling and was an avid polka fan. He started Wagner Labor Day's Polka Day. Harvey's favorite spot was behind the counter at Weisser Oil visiting with friends and customers. He was a devoted husband and father and will be greatly missed by his family.
Thankful for having shared his life are his wife, Darlene of Wagner; his five children: Gail (Alan) Livingston, Yankton; Brian (Tammy), Wagner; Gregg (Lisa), Wagner; Melissa "Missy" (Shane) Odens, Armour; Shane (Jeannie Loneman), Wagner; seven grandchildren; and two sisters: Arlene (LaVern) Schaefer and Velda Mehlhaff, all of Tripp.
Harvey was preceded in death by his parents, stepmother, sister Shirley Bloch, and two brothers-in-law: Frank Bloch and Ruben Mehlhaff.
