Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 5, 2016 at St. Ann Catholic Church in Geddes, with burial in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the church, with the family present. A 7:00 p.m. wake service will follow. Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home of Wagner is in charge of the arrangements.
Helen Mary Mushitz, daughter of Frank and Frances (Meis) Jaeger, was born June 9, 1922 on the family farm two miles west of Geddes. She was the fourth child of nine born to the family. Helen died peacefully Monday, August 1, 2016 at the Golden Living Center in Armour at the age of 94 years, one month and 24 days.
Helen attended St. Ann's Catholic School through the eighth grade and graduated from Geddes Public School in 1940. All of her life was spent in Geddes, except for her college years in Mitchell at Notre Dame and one year teaching in Kimball. Helen taught in a rural school in Rhoda Township, two miles west of Bovee for three years.
On June 10, 1946, Helen married Romus Joseph Mushitz at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Geddes. Before moving to the farm, she taught one year in the Geddes Public School. Three children were chosen and blessed to their union: Janet, William and Robert. Romus died March 12, 1977. Helen continued to live on the farm until September of 1984, when she moved into Geddes.
Helen was an active member of St. Ann Catholic Church, where she was a CCD teacher for 42 years and also served as sacristan for 22 years. She also was a Bible Study Leader where she made numerous new friends and which she totally enjoyed.
Helen was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Geddes Civic Club and St. Ann's Altar Society. She also remained active as a volunteer with the American Cancer Society for many years.
Thankful for having shared her life are her children: Janet and husband Ron Determan, Burke; William (Bill) and wife Patrice, Geddes; and Robert (Bob) and fiance' Jodi Dub, Grand Forks, ND; 11 grandchildren: Chris (Michelle) Determan, Jeff (Amanda) Determan, Adam (Bobbi) Mushitz, Brian (Hillary) Determan, Katie (Matt) Williams, Michelle (Brett) Person, Ellison (Devin) Burmeister, Jay (special friend, Bekah Rye) Determan, Kayla DeGroot, Ethan and Alex Mushitz; 18 great-grandchildren: Britni & Brok Determan; Tommy, Coy & Mya Determan; Emma Alexsson; Chloe & Clare Determan; Gracie & Carter Person; Tamaya, Trey, Tyson & Trystan Mushitz; Caden, Jackson & Brody Williams; and Finley Burmeister; two brothers: Harold (Bernice), Geddes and Charles (Darlene),El Jebel, CO; two sisters: Martha Andersen, Mason City, IA and Margaret (Peggy) Summerville, Platte; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband; three brothers: Art and wife Edna, Ed and Joseph; one sister, Louise Kozak; and three brothers-in-laws: John Kozak, David Summerville and Dean Andersen.
