Bert met Elfreda Lakota in 1975; they shared 23 wonderful years and were always happy together. From this union they shared one daughter Kelli Ann and five step-daughters; Julie, Gloria, Brenda, Tamara & Kerry. Before marrying at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Marty, SD on July 13, 1997, they loved one another until Elfreda's passing on April 14, 1999. Bert loved all his nieces, nephews, grandchildren & great grandchildren. He was always happy to spend time with them and always had something to do or something to cook.

In Bert's younger years, he loved helping his mother raise his siblings, nieces and nephews. He always found work with the local farmers.

Bert moved home to Marty, SD in 1994 where he made his home and worked at the Fort Randall Casino as the Security Door Man from 1994 - 2012.

Bert loved fishing and BINGO. He was known to many of his fellow Bingo players as "JOE BUCKING HORSE".

Bert made his first on-screen Hollywood debut in 1991, when he assisted famous actor Val Kilmer in the Native American based film, Thunderheart.
