Obituary

Irene died Wednesday, April 6, 2011 at the Community Memorial Hospital in Wagner. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Saturday, April 9, 2011 at St. John's Catholic Church in Wagner. Burial is in the parish cemetery, rural Wagner. Visitation will be Friday from 11 AM until 5 PM at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home in Wagner. Rosary/Wake services will be 7 PM, Friday, at the church.

Irene Josephine Slaba, daughter of Martin and Rose (Cuka) Kocmich, was born June 4, 1921 on the home place near Dante, SD. She died Wednesday, April 6, 2011 at the Community Memorial Hospital in Wagner. Irene attained the age of 89 years, ten months and three days.

Irene attended grade school in the Dante area and graduated from Wagner High School in 1941.

Irene married John L. Slaba on November 12, 1946 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Wagner. Four children were blessed to their union. John died July 25, 1977.

Irene worked at various stores in Wagner while attending high school. In the early years of her marriage, she took care of her ailing parents. Irene was a hard worker all of her life. She cooked at the Wagner Sale Barn, worked as a nurses aide at the Wagner Community Hospital, drove the Head Start Bus, worked at Casey's and lastly worked at the Good Samaritan Society in Wagner.

Irene was a member of St. John Catholic Church, St. John Altar Society and the VFW Auxiliary.

Irene enjoyed crocheting and quilting and made many quilts for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She also enjoyed baking, taking trips to Las Vegas, playing Bingo and her cat, Lucy. Irene loved playing cards and taught her grandchildren how to play. She also taught them how to cheat at cards.

Thankful for having shared her life are her children: John and wife Barb of O'Neill, NE, Larry and wife Vicky of Bennington, NE, Don and wife Carol of Wagner and Veronica "Vicki" Swatek and husband Ken of Wagner; 13 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; special companion, Bert Cozad of Wagner; sister-in-law, Anna Koupal of Wagner; and many relatives and friends.

Irene was preceded in death by her husband; parents; one grandson; six brothers: Frank, Martin, Joe, John, Adolph and Tom; and four sisters: Anna Kocmich, Pauline Petrik, Mary Burger and Rose Mazourek.
