James Kelly, 74, of Wagner
Funeral Mass is 10:30 AM, Monday, September 9, 2013 at St. Mark's Catholic Church in Lake Andes. Burial is in the church cemetery, rural Lake Andes with military honors. Visitation is Sunday at St. Mark's from 5 to 7 PM, followed by a 7 PM Rosary/Wake Service. Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home in Wagner is in charge of arrangements.
James John Kelly, eldest son of Francis and Erma (Thiltgen) Kelly, was born July 6, 1939 on the family farm northwest of Corsica, SD. He died unexpectedly Friday, September 6, 2013 at the Community Memorial Hospital in Wagner. JIm attained the age of 74 years and two months.
Jim was the oldest of seven kids. He graduated from Stickney High School in 1957. Jim served in the U.S. Marine Corp.
Jim married Veretta Griffith on August 11, 1973 at St. Mark's Catholic Church in Lake Andes. Three children were blessed to their union. Jim farmed near Corsica. They moved to Lake Andes in 1982. He later worked for the city of Lake Andes, Fort Randall Casino and Jones Food Center. They then moved to Wagner in 2006.
Jim was a member of St. Mark's and St. John's Catholic Churches, Knights of Columbus and the Lion's Club.
Jim enjoyed going to coffee at K's Qwik Stop and at Boom's. He collected toy tractors and had over 500 different ones. Jim and Veretta enjoyed making different things out of wood such as grain bins and barns. Jim also enjoyed doing word searches, listening to polka music and watching Walker, Texas Ranger.
Thankful for having shared his life are his wife of 40 years, Veretta of Wagner; three children: Wesley and Danielle of Mitchell; Patti Kelly and John of Parkston; and Penny Mixon and husband Shawn of Avon; seven grandchildren: Andrew, Cireace, Steven, Haley, Kalee, Kindra and Kaden; five brothers: Larry and wife Clairce, Tom and wife Shirley, all of Armour; Bill and wife Judy, Ronald and wife Delores and Harold and wife BIllie, all of Mitchell; one sister, Mary Alexander of Mitchell; and many nieces and nephews.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents; three Aunts: Agnes Kelly, Ellen Schumacher and Katherine Madagain.
