Obituary

Mass of the Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 4, 2011 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Wagner. Burial will be in St. John Catholic Cemetery, rural Wagner, with military honors. Visitation will be at Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home in Wagner from 2 to 5 Sunday, followed by a 7 pm rosary and wake at the church.

John Henry Swatek, son of Henry and Agnes (Rezac) Swatek, was born April 16, 1946. He died Friday, July 1, 2011 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. John attained the age of 65 years, two months and 16 days.

John attended country school south of Wagner and graduated from Wagner High School in 1964. He joined the U.S. Air Force after high school and was honorably discharged in 1970. John then came home to help with the family farm.

John married Sandra S. Schacht on August 7, 1976 at St. John Catholic Church in Wagner, SD. Four children were blessed to their union.

John farmed the family land until 1997. During and after that time, he worked at various livestock auctions in the area for a number of years. He also managed the City Municipal Bar in Wagner. John will lovingly be remembered for Uncle John's Ice Cream Truck which he owned and operated.

John was a member of St. John Catholic Church in Wagner, the Knights of Columbus, Greer American Legion Post, and a neighborhood pitch club.

John enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, playing dominoes (Bones), watching westerns, listening to polka music, playing cards, fishing and visiting with his friends.

Thankful for having shared his life are his wife Sandra of Wagner; two daughters: Kerry Svatos and husband Josh of Yankton and Molly Gambrell and husband Ryan of Germantown, OH; three grandchildren; two brothers: Stanley and wife Sandee and Ken and wife Vicki, all of Wagner; four sisters: Dorothy Andersh and husband Richard of Wagner, Mary Ann Reeves of Colorado Springs, CO, Regina Broderick of Littleton, CO, and Wilma Wyman of Colorado Springs, CO; brother-in-law Francis Cuka of Wagner; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

John was preceded in death by two sons: Curtis and Kevin; his parents; sister Mildred Cuka; and infant brother Joe; and three brothers-in-law: Bill Reeves, Johnny Broderick and Woody Wyman.
