IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Jonas Maurice
Aungie
April 28, 1986 – May 13, 2025
Jonas Aungie, 39, of Wagner
Funeral services are 11 AM, Saturday, May 17, 2025 at the YST South Gym Community Center. Wake services will be held at 7 PM each night, beginning Wednesday. Burial is in the Holy Name Episcopal Cemetery, rural Wagner.
Jonas Aungie was born April 28, 1986 in Yankton, SD to Nicholas S. Aungie, Sr. and Colleen P. Fox. At the time of his birth he was severely sick requiring 3 emergency baptisms (Episcopal, Presbyterian, and traditional). He passed on Tuesday, May 13, 2025 at his home in Wagner.
His early childhood was one of adventure. On his father's side of the family he was raised traditionally. He loved going to sweats, ceremony and attending Sundance. He also developed a love of baseball and softball. He liked to draw, joke around a lot, and make people laugh. He had a very good sense of humor and a great respect for all he met, especially elders, he took great pride in helping them in any way he could.
In 2001 he met Melissa Sanchez who gave him his first son, Matias Aungie, on December 7, 2005. Together they raised their son until 2007.
Jonas became a BIA firefighter in the summer of 2004 until 2008. He received his GED in 2007/2008 and began working at the Fort Randall Casino in various positions most creditably his time as a food server/waiter for many years on and off.
Jonas met Stephanie Chasing Hawk in 2010. They had four children together. Aryn Aungie in 2001, and the triplets: Gage Aungie, Memoir Aungie and Maesa Aungie in 2012. During his time with Stephanie he gained two bonus children, Aryeon Chasing Hawk and Devin Chasing Hawk. This union ended in 2023.
In 2023 he met Clarice Leroy, who was his partner until his passing. Clarice Leroy had a daughter, Vivian Leroy, who Jonas helped raise. He would proudly call Vivian his child too.
In between working, he was a very proud stay at home father. He loved all of his children and would let everyone know how proud of them he was.
All of Jonas's friends and family would describe him as funny, hard-working, respectful, and a genuine person.
Jonas is survived by his children: Matias Aungie, Aryn Aungie, Gage Aungie, Memori Aungie, Maesa Aungie, Aryeon Chasing Hawk, Devin Chasing Hawk, and Vivian Leroy; his mother Colleen Fox; siblings: Colette Aungie, Nicola Aungie, Edith Aungie, Nicholas Aungie Jr., Brandi Aungie, and Reese Anderson.
Jonas was preceded in death by his brother Lance Little Boy Aungie; his father Nicholas Aungie, Sr; uncle Delano Aungie; grandparents: Robert Lee Fox, Roberta McBride, Gloria Red Buffalo, and William "Bill" Aungie.
