Joseph Shields, Jr., 67, of Wagner
Graveside funeral services are 10 AM, Monday, September 25, 2017 at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Marty. Wake services are Friday and Saturday at the Community Center in Marty and Sunday at the Community Center in Greenwood. Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home in Wagner is in charge of arrangements.
Joseph Shields, Jr. was born on July 3, 1950 in Valentine, NE to Joseph Shields, Sr. and Susie Lance Shields. Joseph died Thursday, September 21, 2017 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.
Joe attended Todd County School in Mission, SD. He lived most of his years on the Rosebud and Yankton Sioux Reservations. His Lakota given name is Wanbli Oyuspa, given to him by his Mother Susie, he carried his name with Honor and grace throughout his life. Joe was a fluent Lakota/Dakota speaker, one of few on the Yankton reservation. He was also well known for his beautiful quillwork, Lakota/Dakota ceremonies and Peyote music. He received a Native American Music Award for his CD called "Wahancanka".
Joe was a very humbled man who was always willing to help. He carried himself as a very respectable person assisting with Inipi ceremonies and other Blessing Ceremonies for the people. Joe strongly believed in the Native American Church, Sundance and Inipi Ceremonies. He had a great deal of knowledge and wisdom of our Native and Cultural ways of Life. He will be greatly missed.
Joseph is survived by his sons: Shane Shields, Joe Shields III of Marty, SD, Marcus Shields of Rapid City, SD, Tally Shields of AZ; adopted siblings Wilford Keeble, Chet Stoneman Sr., Virgil Goode Sr, and David Johns; his long-time companion of 16 years Andrea Luna of Marty, SD; his sisters Linda Lou Shields-Ridgeway of Wagner, SD; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, grandchildren, great-grandchildren with two on the way.
He is preceded in death by his parents Joseph Shields Sr. and Susie Lance Shields; his sons Kevin Shields and Jerry Shields; his daughters Bernadine G. Shields, Stephanie Shields, Melanie Shields; his siblings Luther Dog Eyes, Roger Shields, Duane Lorenzo Shields Sr., Doris Espinoza, Gloria Shields and Evangeline Leighton.
