IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Laura R.
Hiemstra
August 13, 1964 – November 16, 2025
Laura Hiemstra, 61, of Springfield
A private graveside service will be held at the Emmanuel Reformed Cemetery. A public Celebration of Laura's Life will be held on Saturday, November 22, 2025, from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm at the Springfield Community Center in Springfield, SD.
Laura (Hausman) Hiemstra, age 61, of Springfield, SD passed peacefully unto the Lord on Sunday, November 16, 2025 at her home in Springfield.
Laura Renae was born August 13, 1964, in Edgemont, SD to Vincent and Alice (LeFee) Hausman, the youngest of 5 siblings.
She was united in marriage to Kent Hiemstra on May 24, 1986, in Hot Springs, SD. They started their married life in Oral, SD then many years in Orange City, IA and finally settling in Springfield, SD. Together they raised four girls: Alisha, Melissa, Jessica and Cassandra.
Laura enjoyed time with her family and close friends, sewing and quilting, always finding time for someone in need. She enjoyed an ice-cold fountain Diet Dr. Pepper with "the good ice." She was a proud mother and supported her girls in their journeys. Her devotion to being a wife set a firm foundation for her girls and what a lifetime commitment should look like.
Most important to Laura was her faith. Spending time in God's word on a daily basis and making sure her family had a relationship with Christ was her mission. She was known by many for her talent in quilt making. She put prayers and blessings into many quilt squares for those she loved over the years.
She loved her four girls, but being a grandma was her calling. Lovingly nicknamed Grandma Ice she poured Christ like love, life lessons and a love so rich and individual that each grandchild knew their importance. 15 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and many foster grandchildren will forever know the impact of true love.
Grateful for sharing her life is her husband of 39 years, Kent; her four daughters and spouses: Alisha and Christopher DeHaan of Lennox, Melissa Jones of Springfield, Jessica and Matt Gieselman of South Sioux City, and Cassandra and Justin Jelsma of Springfield; 15 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; 3 of her siblings and spouses; a stepbrother; five siblings-in-law with spouses; and many nieces and nephews and close friends.
Laura was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, and parents-in-law.
The family would like to recognize and thank Donna Jelsma for her love, commitment and compassion she has given. We are forever grateful.
