Leona Fryda, 88, of Springfield
Funeral services are 10:30 AM, Friday, August 16, 2013 at the United Church of Christ in Springfield. Burial is in the Springfield Cemetery. Visitation is at the church on Thursday from 5:30 to 7 PM, followed by a Prayer Service.
Leona Bessie Fryda was born August 9, 1925 at the daughter of Emil and Elizabeth (Gotschall) Uken at Springfield, SD. She died Tuesday, August 13, 2013 at St. Michael's Hospital in Tyndall.
Leona was baptized in the Kingsburg Church. She attended Armstrong grade school and graduated from Springfield High School in 1944. She earned a degree in Elementary Education from Southern State Teachers College. She taught school in Bon Homme, Charles Mix and Douglas County for 27 years.
Leona married Lewis Fryda on February 14, 1948. They moved to the Armour area, where they lived for 31 years. They retired and moved back to Springfield in 1979. Lewis died in 1987.
Leona helped many people and loved working at the Nutrition Center with Senior Citizens. She also helped at the Wagon Wheel Motel. Leona was a member of the UCC Church and held various offices in it.
Leona will be remembered for her love of coffee, Casey's donuts, fried chicken, reading, playing cards and watching volleyball games.
Thankful for having shared her life are her daughter, Carol (Jeff) Skonhovd of Yankton; three grandchildren: Dan (Kami) Guthmiller of Yankton and their children, Jace and Elle; Dave Guthmiller of Colman; and Deb (Jeff) Herrboldt of Scotland and their son Bryce; two step grandchildren: Sara (Dave) Dekker of Sioux Falls and Lynn (Brandy) Skonhovd of Viborg and their children, Paisley, Presley and Berkley; two brothers: Ray (Lorna) Uken of Yankton; Bill Uken of Lahabra, CA; sister, Mary Cathey of Oceanside, CA; five sisters-in-law: Hazel Kaufman of Yankton; Evelyn (Bob) Coleman of Springfield; Doris Fryda of Oxford, NE; Maxine Fryda of Tyndall and Mardelle Uken of Sioux Falls; and many nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
Leona was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis; parents; five brothers: Glen; Jake; Larry; Leo and Leonard; two sisters: Lola Travnicek and Ruth Chacon; and several brothers and sisters-in-law.
