Wake services will be 7 PM on Tuesday and Wednesday at the Boys and Girls Club Gym in Marty. Funeral Services are 2 PM, Thursday, October 25, 2012 at the Gym. Burial is in the Holy Fellowship Episcopal Cemetery, rural Greenwood.
Luverne Selwyn, Jr. was born December 3, 1951 at Wagner Indian Hospital in Wagner, SD, the son of Luverne Selwyn, Sr. and Zelda Jane (Packard) Selwyn. He passed into the Spirit World on Sunday, October 21, 2012 at the Wagner Community Hospital in Wagner, SD. Luverne was 60 years of age at the time of his passing.
Luverne attended Marty Indian School in Marty, SD, Yankton Public School in Yankton, SD and the School for the Deaf in Sioux Falls, SD, where he excelled in various forms of artisanship. He attended the Cullinary Institute in Minneapolis, MN. He was very well loved by his family and liked by all who met him. Luverne was always evenhanded and well hearted towards all who had the fortune of meeting him. He will be strongly missed by all.
Luverne was a well known and very talented painter, beader and carver. His art is displayed in the State Capitol building in Pierre, SD, Charles Mix County courthouse, the Fort Randall Casino, JoDean's Family Restaurant in Yankton, SD, Yankton Sioux Tribal Hall and in various offices in Germany, France, Hawaii and British Columbia, Canada. He displayed his art in many, many art shows and was a popular sign painter in the Wagner area. He was honored with an achievement award from Governor Mickelson in 1992. He had a talent for creating superior native beadwork and it is worn by hundreds of traditional and fancy dancers across Indian Country. Luverne enjoyed visiting with his family and friends, was fond of California and the musical groups, Three Dog Night, April Wine and Bread. He spent many of his past time hours watching 49ers football and baseball.
Luverne's surviving family include his sister Georgette Selwyn-Boyer and husband Francis of Wagner, SD; sister Carol Selwyn-Halbert and husband Dan of Yankton, SD; sister Marion Selwyn-Jones and husband Jim of Rapid City, SD; brother Merwyn "Jim" Selwyn of Sioux Falls, SD; sister Lois Selwy-Stock of Yankton, SD; brother Todd Selwyn and Nadine of Wagner, SD; his adopted granddaughter Alaina Weddell of Marty, SD; a daughter of Dolton, SD; niece Shieleen Selwyn-Rowe of Virginia Beach, VA; niece Donita Selwyn-Richie of Sioux Falls, SD; 29 nieces and nephews and he loved them all very much.
Luverne was preceded in death by his parents, Luverne Sr. and Zelda Jane; his brothers and sisters: Loretta Charlene Selwyn; Delphine Doney; Joyce Robles; Kenneth Selwyn; Wayne Charles Selwyn; Allen Kieth Selwyn and Ernest Dale Selwyn; his nephews: Dondi Selwyn; Kevin Anderson and Ron Andersen, Jr.; and niece, Leah Boyer.
