Obituary

Marjorie Tjeerdsma, 93, of Springfield

A Celebration of Marjorie's Life will be 1:30 PM, Saturday, August 30, 2025 at the Emmanuel Reformed Church in Springfield. Visitation will be at the church on Saturday from noon-1:30. Burial is in the Emmanuel Reformed Cemetery, rural Springfield. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be directed to charities to be determined.


Marjorie Frances (Bierema) Tjeerdsma was born March 10, 1932 at Avon, SD to Peter and Sadie (Schotanus) Bierema. She died at Tyndall Good Samaritan on August 23, 2025. She attained the age of 93 years and 5 months.

Marjorie was baptized at the Emmanuel Reformed Church of rural Springfield. She attended rural Quinn country school and graduated from Springfield High School in 1950. She went on to attend Sacred Heart School of Nursing at Yankton, SD, graduating as an RN in 1953. She married Donald Tjeerdsma on May 14, 1954 at Emmanuel Reformed Church and five children were born to their union.

Marjorie was an active member of Emmanuel Reformed Church of Springfield where she participated in Willing Workers for many years, serving at farm sales and other church functions. She also served as a nurse at Inspiration Hills summer camps for several years.

Marjorie worked at St. Micheal's Hospital as an RN for more than 40 years, helping with deliveries, surgeries, medical emergencies, and mentoring many young nurses. She was known as "Mother Marj" to many.

Marjorie had a passion for sewing and embroidery work, making many Christmas stockings for school children, family, friends, and many others. She also enjoyed playing piano and spending time with family.

Marjorie is survived by her children: Virgil (Susan) Tjeerdsma of Tyndall and their children, Cody & Marcus, Douglas (Danae) Tjeerdsma of Aplington, IA and their children, Adam, Scott, & Nicholas, Percy (Connie) Tjeerdsma of Springfield and their children, Kendra, Heather, & Heidi; son-in-law Terry Winegar of Virgil, SD and his daughter Mary, Bonnie (Chris) Blankenship of Lafayette IN; 24 great grandchildren; and a host of family and friends.

Marjorie was preceded in death by her husband Donald, daughter Marcia Winegar, her parents, brother Sidney Bierema & sister-in-law Arlene; and one great grandson, Tate Krueger.
