Mary Helen Carda was born September 10, 1909 at Lake Andes, SD, the daughter of Frank and Josephine (Volenik) Kozak. She died May 8, 2015 at the Good Samaritan Society in Wagner.
Mary attended school through the eleventh grade. She didn't complete high school because she was needed on the farm to help take care of her mother who had become ill.
Mary married James Carda on April 26, 1938 at St. Mark's Catholic Church in Lake Andes. Together they farmed all of their life, first south of town then later moving to a farm northwest of Wagner. Jimmy died in 1994 and Mary then lived with JoEllen in Wagner until entering the Good Samaritan Society in Wagner in 2012.
Mary was a member of St. John Catholic Church and held many offices in the Altar Society, Catholic Daughters, AARP and the Hospital Auxiliary. She did a lot of volunteer work and was a former Volunteer of the Year at the Good Samaritan Society.
Mary will be remembered for her good cooking and baking, especially Kolaches. She loved having her grandkids come to the farm for the summer and they loved being there.
Thankful for having share her life are her two adopted children, Jeanneane Cederburg of Spearfish and JoEllen Carda of Wagner; she also raised Shirley (Steve "Pep") Carda of Hobbs, NM; four grandchildren: Kevin, Brian (Natalie), Lisa and Randy; two great grandchildren, Dylan and Christopher; two great-great grandchildren, Riley and Embyr; and numerous, nieces and nephews.
