Obituary

Melvin Leo Hopkins, Sr.

Melvin died Tuesday, December 12, 2017, the result of an automobile accident east of Wagner. Funeral services are 2 PM, Friday, December 15, 2017 at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Marty. Burial is in the church cemetery. Wake services will be Thursday at the White Swan Community Center in Lake Andes.

Melvin "Leo" Hopkins Sr. was born on April 14th, 1963 in Wagner, SD to Armand Hopkins Sr. and Rita Gray.  Leo was raised in Lake Andes, SD and attended Andes Central High School through the 12th grade. He attended some college at the University of South Dakota – Springfield where he studied auto mechanics.  Leo was a jack of all trades and worked various types of jobs including delivering propane for the Yankton Sioux Tribe, road construction for the Topkote Construction, and up until the time of his death he worked for Myers Sanitation.  Leo loved the outdoors and was a very passionate hunter and fisherman.  Leo will be remembered by most as a wild free spirit with a great sense of humor.

Leo is survived by his 5 children:  Melvin Leo Hopkins Jr., Charles (Tracy) Hopkins, Joseph (JoJo) Hopkins, Tanner (Karlin) Houseman, and Leo "Tre" Hopkins; 4 brothers:  Armand Hopkins Jr., Keeler (Melda) Hopkins, Robert (Nicki) Gray, and Roger Hopkins; 3 sisters:  Kimberly Wright, Tiffany Gray, and Edna Hopkins; 13 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, aunts, and cousins and also his first love Jeanie Houseman and very special friend Sara Rolston.  Leo was preceded in death by his parents and an infant daughter.

He touched many lives, made many people smile, and will be greatly missed by all.
