Obituary

Mildred Gimbel, , of Yankton, formerly of Springfield

Funeral services will be 2 PM, Saturday, February 19, 2022 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Springfield. Burial will be in the Springfield Cemetery, Springfield, SD. Visitation will be at Peters Funeral Home in Springfield from 12 to 1 PM on Saturday, with refreshments served.

Mildred was taken home to be with her Lord at the Avera Sister James Care Center in Yankton on Tuesday, February 15, 2022.

Mildred Marie (Priebe) Gimbel was born October 9, 1924, on a farm near Tyler, MN, and placed into the loving arms of her parents, George and Johanna (Sorensen) Priebe. She was baptized on November 23, 1924. Her family moved to Leeds (Sioux City, IA) where she was later confirmed at Calvary Lutheran Church in Sioux City, IA.

After graduation, Mildred moved to San Francisco, CA and worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad during WW II. She met Alvin through her sister-in-law when he was in the Navy. Their first date was going to church on Sunday morning and then out for ice cream. Alvin and Mildred were married August 18, 1945 in Richmond, CA while Al was on his first leave since being shipped overseas to New Guinea a couple years earlier. The war ended while he was on leave.

Mildred worked as a bookkeeper in the First National Bank in Sioux City, IA. They moved to Scotland and owned and operated the Scotland Cafe. They moved back to California and she worked for Bank of America in Richmond, CA They returned to South Dakota and made their permanent home in Springfield. Both Alvin and Mildred worked for Midkiff Hardware for six years before purchasing Klutter Hardware. They changed the name to Al's Hardware and owned the store for 24 years until they retired.

Mildred enjoyed crocheting, knitting, sewing, reading, gardening and flowers. She was an "excellent" cook and baker. She also enjoyed Chinese checkers, board games and card games. They also enjoyed traveling and camping. She especially enjoyed spending time with her husband, children and their families.

Alvin and Mildred were members of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Springfield from July of 1958 until their deaths. She taught Sunday school for 13 years and was active in the Ladies Aide and LWML. They were married 75 years and 22 days.

Mildred is survived by her two children Deborah (Ken) Blom of Sioux Falls and Larry (Theresa) Gimbel of Milesville; three grandchildren: David, Marcella and Ryan; two great grandchildren: Anastasia and Layson; sister-in-law, MaryJo Gimbel of Scotland; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Mildred was preceded in death by her husband Alvin on September 9, 2020; her parents; two brothers: Harold (Laverne) Priebe and Albert (Phoebe) Priebe; and Alvin's brothers: Rueben (Vilva) Gimbel, Reinhold (Eleanor) Gimbel and LeRoy Gimbel.
