Doc married Margarette Sather Krall on January 14, 1944 in Sioux Falls, SD.

Doc served in WWII from 1943 to 1946 in the US Army Air Force as a second lieutenant, flying B-17 and B-29 bombers.

Doc attended USD in Vermillion and graduated from the Northern Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago. He started his own optometric clinic in Wagner, SD in 1950 and practiced until his retirement in 1994.

He was on the local hospital board. Upon retirement he was a volunteer driver for the local ambulance service. Some of his awards include the Siouxland Sportsman of the Year award and he was chosen as Wagner's first Citizen of the Year. Doc was honored and humbled to receive these awards.

Doc's hobbies included fishing, hunting and camping in Custer State Park. His best hunting partner was his wife who had to shoot her own game. His large garden at the farm in Tyndall and his roses were his pride and joy.

Doc was the local NWS weather person in Wagner, SD for over 50 years and received a national award for that.

Doc is survived by his wife of 68 years, Margarette, of Wagner; four children: Mary Lynn (Bill) Mains of Yankton; Bob (Jean) Schuurmans, of Pierre; Deb Schuurmans, of Colorado Springs, CO; and Nancy Schuurmans of Spearfish, SD; as well as four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
