Myrtle Rose Wiechmann was born November 8, 1925, to Henry and Rosa (Trickler) Wiechmann on a farm north of Wagner, SD. She passed away Tuesday, July 7, 2009 at the Wagner Community Memorial Hospital in Wagner.
Myrtle attended an area country grade school and later she rode the bus to Ravina Consolidated High School until she graduated in 1943. Myrtle then left the farm she was born on to attend Southern State Normal School for one summer after which she attained a teaching certificate. She taught country school south of Wagner for three years, retuning to Springfield during the summers to advance her education.
In May 1946, Myrtle married William Hollmann at the Congregational Church in Armour, SD. After spending time in Springfield, MO with the military, they returned to a farm south of Wagner. Myrtle continued teaching country school as they started their family. William and Myrtle moved their family into Wagner in 1957. William worked for the National Guard while Myrtle stayed home to raise their eight children. For more than 30 years Myrtle provided child care for many working families. Bill and Myrtle celebrated 60 years of marriage prior to his death in 2006.
Bill and Myrtle enjoyed traveling. They rarely missed a National Guard or VFW Convention where they made life long friends. Myrtle was a member, held offices, and received awards in VFW Auxiliary, South Dakota National Guard Enlisted Association, Wagner Hospital Auxiliary, Good Samaritan Auxiliary, and United Methodist Women.
Myrtle is remembered by her family for her love of flowers, meticulous stitching, handwritten correspondence, cooking and canning. Her greatest joy was having her family together. Myrtle's hands were never idle and her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were the recipients of her heartfelt work. Her apple butter recipe is a family treasure.
