Phyllis Romkema, 90, of Springfield

Funeral services are 10:30 AM, Friday, January 31, 2020 at the Emmanuel Reformed Church in Springfield. Burial is in the Emmanuel Reformed Cemetery, rural Springfield. Visitation is Thursday from 5 to 7 PM at the Emmanuel Reformed Church.

Phyllis Carol Romkema was born on September 10, 1929, the daughter of Jess and Johanna (Odens) Tjeerdsma. She died Tuesday, January 29, 2020 at the Good Samaritan Home in Tyndall, SD.

Phyllis attended the Kingsburg and Hitt rural schools. She graduated from Springfield High School in 1947.

Phyllis was united in marriage to Raymond Romkema on June 25, 1947. She and Ray farmed near Springfield until retiring and moving to town in 1982.

Phyllis made her confession of faith on March 27, 1947 and remained a faithful member of the Emmanuel Reformed Church all of her life. Phyllis served as a Sunday School teacher and vacation Bible School teacher. She also served as Treasurer for Reformed Church Women Dakota West Classis and was a member of Willing Workers Circle and Guild. She was a devoted Christian, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and an inspiration to all who met her. She will be remembered for her love of gardening, needlework, quilting, bowling, canning, golfing with Ray, and baking her "Grandma Romkema's" chocolate chip cookies.

Grateful for having shared her life are her children: Gary (Joyce) Romkema, Jay (Carol) Romkema, Joleen (Rick Adamson), Terry (Diane) Romkema and Paul Romkema; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law Joyce and Larry Svanda; brother and sister-in-law Calvin and Vicki Tjeerdsma; sisters-in-law Cornelia Tjeerdsma and Jerralynne Tjeerdsma; and many nieces and nephews.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband Raymond; son Jim and daughter-in-law Barb. Also preceding her in death were her parents, her brother and sister-in-law Orvan and Gertrude Tjeerdsma, sister and brother-in-law Shirley and Donald Jelsma, brother James Tjeerdsma and brother Leslie Tjeerdsma.
