Richard Dean Jones, Sr. 78, of Springfield
Memorial Services will be held on Friday, May 22, 2026 at 2:00 pm at the United Church of Christ in Springfield. Burial is at the Springfield Cemetery with military honors. Visitation with the family will be from 12:30 pm to 2 pm Friday at the church. Peters Funeral Chapel in Springfield is in charge of arrangements.
Richard Dean Jones, Sr. was born October 16, 1947 in Wagner, SD to Elmer and Dorothy (Honomichl) Jones, Sr. Richard passed away May 17, 2026 at the Sister James Care Center at Majestic Bluffs in Yankton.
Richard graduated from Avon High School in 1966 and went on to serve in the US Army until 1969. On September 4, 1971 he married Elaine Kelly from Sisseton. To this union 3 children were born: Amy, Dick and Melissa.
Richard retired in 2010. He worked for Halsey Construction and then took a job at Mike Durfee State Prison running the heating plant and maintenance for 23 years.
Richard loved to fish and hunt. His passion was fishing. Richard and his buddy Vern spent many hours on the river. Richard also loved to be with his grandkids and his dog Bella and his special dog Reba.
Thankful to have shared his life are his wife Elaine of Springfield; daughter Amy (Mark) Huether of Parkston, daughter Melissa (Mike) Schmidt of Tripp, and his son Dick of Tyndall; grandchildren: Megan, Tyler, April, Alexis, James, Declyn, and Oliver; 4 great-grandchildren: Banks, Cooper, Ainsley, Whitley, and one more on the way; brother Elmer Jones of Springfield; and sister Wanda (Mark) Gillen of White Lake.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, sister Janice, 3 nephews: Eric, Bruce, and Brad; 7 brothers-in-law: Nick, Gordie, John, Keith, Darrell, Wayne, and Joe; and 3 sisters-in-law: Janet, Carol and Jeanie.
We love you and will miss you so much!!
