Robert S. Humphrey, 77, of Wagner, SD
Wake services will begin Saturday at 7 PM and Sunday at 5 PM at the National Guard Armory in Wagner. Wake services will continue Monday evening at the Ho Chunk Center in Winnebago, NE. Funeral services are at noon on Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2014 at the Ho Chunk Center with burial in the Winnebago Tribal Cemetery, Winnebago, NE, with Military Honors. Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home in Wagner, SD is in charge of arrangements.
Robert S. Humphrey (Bob), G/Sgt USMC Retired, was born January 24, 1937 in Winnebago, Nebraska. He died Saturday, November 22, 2014 at his home in Wagner. Bob is a member of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska.
Bob attended public schools in Sioux City, Iowa and graduated from Central High School in 1955. He entered the Marine Corps Reserves in 1954 and entered Marine Corps active duty upon graduation.
Bob's military service included: sea-going duty on the USS Essex in the Far East; Marine Barracks, Great Lakes, IL; State Department School - assigned to Vientiane, Laos and Manila, Philippines; Barstow, CA and nuclear ordinance school in White Sands, NM; Nuclear Ordinance Platoon in Camp LeJune, NC and Okinawa, Japan; Red Beach, Vietnam (2 tours); Marine supply activity in Philadelphia, PA; Nuclear Ordinance member at 29 Palms, CA, Nuclear Objective PLP, Okinawa, Japan; retired from Camp Pendleton, CA on January 1, 1974 due to medical disability.
Military awards received include: Good Conduct with 5 Stars, Meritorious Mast, Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Unit Citation, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal with 1 Star, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm and Device, U.S. Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device.
Bob is predeceased by parents Lucy Ruth Humphrey Matsushige and Kenji Matsushige, 2 sisters, 3 nephews and 2 grandchildren.
Bob is survived by his wife Antonia Flores Humphrey and 5 children: Randall (Albuquerque, NM), Teresa (Wagner, SD), Mark (Wahpeton, ND), and Duren and Parris (Wagner, SD) and 5 grandchildren. He is also survived by children from his first marriage: Bernadette Bernardo (Rochester, NY), Michael Humphrey (New York, NY), Alicia Humphrey (Quantico, VA), Erika Humphrey (Las Vegas, NV) 4 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Also surviving are 2 sisters: Susan Matsushige (Tempe, AZ) and Naomi John (Mesa, AZ), nieces, nephews, numerous cousins, relatives and friends of the Yankton Sioux and Ho Chunk tribes, and a lifetime of friends from around the United States and world.
