Roger E. Horst, 63 of Bonesteel
Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Tuesday, April 1, 2008 at St. John Lutheran Church in Wagner, with burial in the ZCBJ Cemetery, rural Wagner. Visitation will be at the church from 12 noon to the time of service on Tuesday. Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home of Wagner is in charge of the arrangements.

Roger Earl Horst was born June 3, 1944 in Valentine, Nebraska, Cherry County, the son of Richard and Violet (Haldiman) Horst. He died Friday, March 28, 2008 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. Roger attained the age of 63 years, nine months and 25 days.
Roger attended grade school in Mission, Chamberlain and Armour. He enjoyed playing football on the Armour Packer team and graduated from Armour High School in 1964.
Roger married Sharon "Sherry" Kay Pietz on September 5, 1964 in Wagner and enjoyed the blessing of a daughter and a son.
In 1966, he moved to Loves Park (Rockford) Illinois and became a machinist and later a machine shop foreman at Mattison Machine. In 1981, he moved to Bonesteel and built and operated Horst Machine Shop and also drove the Bonesteel school bus. In 1990, he started driving a gravel truck for Opperman Sand & Gravel. Roger was a man of many talents. He loved to dance, hunt, fish, and everything he did in life he did with a great deal of zest and enthusiasm. While living in Illinois and in Bonesteel he also found time to volunteer his services as Fire Chief. He will long be remembered for being very generous with his time, knowledge and willingness to help. He worked hard and he played hard. Roger will also be remembered for being a very loving and caring father and grandfather. Thankful for having shared his life are his wife of 43 years, Sherry, Bonesteel; children: Pamela (Jerry) Hemmer, Yankton and Randy (Sandy) Horst, Sioux Falls; three grandchildren: Alisha (Bradley) Stehr, Brook Hemmer, all of McCook Lake and Michael Horst, Sioux Falls; two brothers: Ronald (Darlene) Horst of Badger and Steven (Anna) Horst of Dell Rapids; father-in-law, Vilmer Pietz of Bonesteel; sister-in-law, Janice (George) Leper of Las Vegas, NV; special friend, Don Heezen of Armour and a host of other relatives.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Violet Horst; mother-in-law, Mildred Pietz; and brother-in-law, Roger Pietz.
