Roger Ridgway, 81, of Avon
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 1, 2018 at 2 pm at First Presbyterian Church in Avon, SD. Visitation will be held at the church on Tuesday from 6:30 to 8 pm. Burial will be in the Trinity Presbyterian Cemetery, rural Avon, with Military Honors. Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Chapel in Avon is in charge of arrangements.
Roger Earl Ridgway, 81 years of age, died Sunday, July 29, 2018 at the Good Samaritan Home in Wagner, South Dakota surrounded by family.
Roger was born on July 1, 1937 in Avon, South Dakota to Earl and Leola Ridgway.
Roger graduated from Avon High School in 1955. After high school Roger worked for Clark Construction. Roger served in the United States Navy from 1960 to 1962 as a Motion Picture Operator. He worked as a bricklayer until his retirement.
Roger married Reta Ann Wagner on October 5, 1963 in Tyndall, South Dakota. To this union 3 children were born, Kelly Joseph, Karla Kay and Daniel William.
Roger was a Life Member of the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers. He was honored with 3 Master Craftsmanship Awards from the Construction Industry Center in 1985, 1989 and 1991.
Roger was an avid watcher of athletic events. He was a loyal fan of the Avon Pirates, Lusk Tigers, Dickinson State Bluehawks and Hinton Blackhawks. Roger and Reta were honored with the 2010-11 Avon School District Fans of the Year. He enjoyed golfing, playing cards and making conversation with anyone he saw.
Roger is survived by his wife, Reta, of Avon South Dakota, children, Kelly (Pam) of Sioux City, Iowa, Karla VandeBossche (Matt) of Lusk, Wyoming and Dan (Jennifer Johnson) of Lennox, South Dakota; 5 grandchildren, Hayley, Jesse and Ty Ridgway, Matthew and Derick VandeBossche; and aunt and uncle Cleo and Dale Reiff.
Roger was preceded in death by parents Earl and Leola Ridgway, step father Tom Rigdon, in-laws Lawrence and Helen Wagner, brother Gary Ridgway and sister Jodene Critton.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family for a donation to be determined.
Pallbearers will be Hayley Ridgway, Matthew VandeBossche, Derick VandeBossche, Jesse Ridgway and Ty Ridgway.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Gene Wagner, Ron Wagner, Mike Haller, Dale Reiff, Jack Coleman, Phil Critton and the many bricklayers he worked with over the years.
