Sarah A. Halsey was born June 18, 1923 to John J. R. and Anna J. Hofer of Bridgewater. She died Wednesday, May 1, 2019 at St. Michael's Avera Hospital in Tyndall. Sarah attained the age of 95 years, 10 months and 12 days.
Sarah attended rural elementary school and Bridgewater High School. She earned her teaching certificate from Southern State Normal School in Springfield and taught rural school. She was united in marriage to Clarence Glen Halsey on July 27, 1944. They farmed west of Springfield for many years. Together Glen and Sarah began Halsey Dirt Moving with Sarah serving as bookkeeper. Following retirement, Sarah and Glen remained on the farm for many years. In their early 90s they moved into the Springfield Assisted Living Center and later into the Good Samaritan Society in Tyndall.
Sarah was a devoted Christian, wife, daughter, mother and grandmother. Throughout her life, she participated actively in her church community, serving on various committees, and taught Sunday School. Her family and friends joyfully benefited from her lifelong love of gardening, baking, and sewing. Publicly shy, she loved a good laugh and was known to tease her family with her eyes sparkling.
Thankful for having shared her life is her adoring husband of nearly 75 years, Glen "Shorty" Halsey. She will be missed by daughters Connie Ferdig of Yankton, Janice Bailey of Huntsville, AL, and Nancy Nagel of Trumbull, CT; 12 grandchildren; and many beloved great and great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by her dear sister, Dorothy Preheim of Freeman.
Sarah was preceded in death by her beloved son-in-law Jan Nagel; her brother Eli and wife Justina Hofer, brother Samuel Hofer, sister Rebecca and husband Paul Walter, brother Peter and wife Pearl Hofer, brother-in-law James Preheim, and siblings David, Mary, and John who passed in childhood.
