Obituary

Sheryl Anne "Sherry" Wiechmann, 62 of Wagner

Funeral services will be 1:30 pm Saturday, October 16, 2010 at the United Methodist Church in Wagner. Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home of Wagner is in charge of the arrangements.

Sheryl Anne Wiechmann, daughter of Harold and Dorothy (Eden) Hass was born April 23, 1948 at Cleveland, OH. She died Wednesday, October 13, 2010 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton after a 4 1/2 year battle with cancer. Sherry attained the age of 62 years, five months and 21 days.

Sherry was the oldest of four children. She graduated from Whittier High School in Whittier, CA and then attended Mount San Antonio College in Walnut, CA. While living in California, she worked as a bookkeeper and tax preparer. Sherry met John P. Wiechmann while attending college and they were married on May 12, 1971. After John retired from the Navy in 1980, they returned to John's home town of Wagner, SD, where they lived until the present. Sherry was a homemaker and she enjoyed canning the produce from John's garden.

Sherry and John enjoyed dancing, especially ballroom and square dancing. They started square dancing in 1979 and they continued to enjoy that together until Sherry's cancer forced them to stop in 2006.

Sherry was a member of the United Methodist Church in Wagner, the UMW Auxiliary, Lion's Club, and the Mighty MoDonna Red Hats. She served as the UMC treasurer for 24 years.

Sherry enjoyed cutting piecing quilts and hand stitching them to give away to relatives and friends. She made over 10 quilts that were raffled off by the Lion's Club as fund raisers. (There is still an unfinished quilt by her chair today.) Along with Geraldine Crisman, they knitted and crocheted prayer shawls (over 60) for people in the community battling cancer or other life threatening illnesses.

Sherry also decorated and sold countless cakes over the years.

Sherry will be remembered for always having a positive attitude and a smile for everyone. She loved and collected angels and frogs. Her slogan was "FROG": Fully Rely On God!

Thankful for having shared her life are her husband of 39 years, John of Wagner; father of Carson City, NV; and sister Christine Hass of Vail, AZ.

Sherry was preceded in death by her mother; sister Cindy; and brother Jim.
In lieu of flowers, memorials will be directed to the United Methodist Church for the stained glass window and door funds.
