Susan N. Schacht, 95, of Wagner, SD

Susan died Monday, August 4, 2008 at the Good Samaritan Society in Wagner, SD. Services are 10 AM, Saturday, August 9, 2008 at the Crosby- Jaeger Funeral Home in Wagner, SD. Burial will be at approximately 1:30 PM at the Riverview Cemetery in Rock Rapids, IA. Visitation will be Friday from 2 PM until 7 PM at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home in Wagner.

Susan Naomi Ely was born on the east side of Rock Rapids, Iowa when the area was more prairie than town, to Theodore and Minerva Ely. Her future husband was married to her eldest sister Martha, who died in child birth in 1934. She had kept house for Martha and R. W. "Bud" Schacht until Martha and new born daughter had died. One year later she married R. W. "Bud" Schacht.

Susan was a home maker and mother to five children. After the children were grown she worked for many years as a nursing home cook. Her first position was with a new nursing home in Rock Rapids, Iowa. She held this position from the 1960's until the summer of 1975, when her husband died. She then moved with her daughter Sandra to Lake Andes, South Dakota where her son Larry Schacht was in business. She took a cooks position in the new Lake Andes Nursing Home which she held until her retirement. Susan then moved to Wagner, South Dakota near her daughter, Sandra and her family. She was a resident of the Wagner Good Samaritan Home from 1999 until her death.

Susan will be remembered for her love of people, her constant cheerful manner, her love of reading and the joy of grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Susan is survived by her five children: Larry (Terry) Schacht, Pickstown, SD; Paul (Linda) of Harrisonburg, VA; twins Kenneth (Barbara) of Miami, FL; Keith (Kathy) of Lockport, IL and Sandra Swatek (John) of Wagner, SD; twelve grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Susan was preceded in death by her husband, Bud, three sisters: Florence Miller; Violet Medema; Theodora Medema and a half brother, Claude Ely.
