Tommy Ray Svatos, 58, of Lake Andes

Tommy died at his home on the farm in rural Lake Andes on Monday, November 29, 2010, surrounded by his family, after a battle with cancer. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M., Saturday, December 4, 2010 at St. Mark's Catholic Church in Lake Andes. Burial is in Lakeview Cemetery, rural Lake Andes, with military honors. Visitation will be at the church on Friday from 3 PM until 7 PM, followed by a 7 PM Prayer Service.

Tommy Ray Svatos was born April 8, 1952 in Pickstown, SD to Albert and Rose (Chytka) Svatos. He died at his home on the farm in rural Lake Andes on Monday, November 29, 2010, surrounded by his family after a battle with cancer since May of 2009. Tommy attained the age of 58 years, seven months and 22 days.

Tommy grew up on the family farm by Svatos Bay area. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lake Andes First Lutheran Church. He attended White Swan #89 country school through the 3rd grade then he attended and graduated from Andes Central in 1970.

On June 17, 1972 he married the love of his life Rita Filsinger. They were married for 38 years. To this union four children were born: Chad, Brad, Sheri and Cody. As a family, they continued to operate Svatos Ranch for 4 generations. Tom was a member of the Army National Guard from September 1971 – May 1985. He served on the Andes Central School Board for 25 years, was an active member of Dante Lake Club since 1976, and served on the Fish Day Committee and enjoyed the events for many years. Tom was also a big fan of the Andes Central Eagles and enjoyed going to all of the sporting events. Tom loved to play cards and was never afraid to talk to a stranger and he always had a good joke.

He is survived by his wife, four children: Chad (Brenda), Brad, Sheri (Chalo) Valdez, and Cody and fiancé Maggie Malloy; grandchildren Lauren Lee, Sydney Ann and Jordan Jo Svatos, and Rosario Thomas and Carlo Alberto Valdez; honorary son, Brent Dumdei; brother Lee (Jane) of Manhatten, KS; brother and sister-in-law Duane (Shirley) Filsinger of Tulsa, OK; three step sisters Norma Winchester, Judy Blaine and Janice Beale, all of Colorado; sister-in-law Bev Scott of Plankinton; many nieces and nephews; and his special companion Copper.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandson Mateo Valdez, brother R.G Svatos, grandparents, parents-in-law and step mother.
