Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 12, 2018, at St. John Catholic Church in Wagner. Burial will be at the parish cemetery, rural Wagner, with military honors. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home in Wagner, followed by Wake and Rosary Services at the church.
Waldon James "Buck" Eggers, son of of Fred and Ann (Kostel) Eggers, was born June 30, 1929 in Wagner. He died peacefully at his apartment in Wagner on Wednesday, March 7, 2018. Buck attained the age of 88 years.
Buck grew up on the family farm south of Wagner. He attended Ree Country School through the eighth grade and graduated from Wagner High School at the young age of 16. Buck attended SDSU for two years and then was drafted into the U.S. Marines. Due to an injury during basic training, he was honorably discharged. Buck then returned home to the family farm where he farmed with his father. Buck took great pride in raising sheep and in their care and appearance.
Waldon married Norma Jean Miller on November 26, 1956. Five children were born to their union. Together they farmed 13 miles southwest of Wagner until 1984, when they semi-retired and moved into town.
Waldon was a life long member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Wagner, Knights of Columbus and the American Legion Greer Post.
Buck served on many boards over the years. He served on the Ree Township Board as clerk and supervisor for over 20 years, the Wagner School Board for four years, the Wagner Ambulance for 15 years and the South Central Water Board.
Buck greatly enjoyed trapping catfish and fishing for walleye on the Missouri River by Greenwood. He also enjoyed watching pro football on TV and taking his grandkids for rides around the farm.
Thankful for having shared his life are four children: Marjorie (Gary) Beckman of Parker; James (Peggy) and Paul (Patty), all of Wagner; and Paulette Eggers of Sioux Falls; eight grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; brother, Douglas (Carol) of Laurel, MD; sister, Marilyn Jackson of Gilbert, AZ; along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Waldon was preceded in death by his wife, Norma on October 31, 2016; an infant daughter, Jeanette; and his parents.
In lieu of flowers, memorials will be directed to the Meals on Wheels Program.
