William D. Carda, Jr. 76 of Lake Andes
Memorial Mass Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 23, 2012 at St. Mark's Catholic Church in Lake Andes, with inurnment at the parish cemetery. Visitation will be 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the church, with the family present. There will be a 7 p.m. Rosary service, followed by a Wake service.
William Dean Carda, Jr., son of Willian and Nellie (Nelson) Carda, Sr., was born February 1, 1936 on a farm near Lake Andes, SD. He died Friday, May 18, 2012 at the Wagner Community Memorial Hospital. Bill attained the age of 76 years, three months and 18 days.
Bill attended country school through the eighth grade and graduated from Lake Andes High School. He received his Bachelor's degree in 1958 from Southern State Teachers' College and his Master's degree in Math and Science in 1962 from the University of South Dakota. He did additional graduate work in the field of educational administration at the University of South Dakota and SDSU.
Bill's first love was teaching. He taught at Hoven for one year and then Miller for two years. In 1962, he and his family moved to Lake Andes, where he taught math and served as principal. Bill became the superintendent of Andes Central in 1967, retiring from this position in 1991. He continued to teach math there for 10 years and one year at Marty. Bill also taught math classes at the Tribal college in Marty for several years.
Bill married Mary E. Morgen on August 6, 1958 at St. John's Catholic Church in Wagner. Four children were blessed to their union.
Bill was an active member of St. Mark's Catholic Church where he served as president of the financial council and cemetery board; the Knights of Columbus, where he held every office; the Lake Andes City Council; the Lakers; and the SD Retired Superintendents Association.
Bill will be remembered for his love of his children and grandchildren and attending their various school activities. In his younger years, he loved to play baseball and then became an avid golfer, but his favorite sport was track. In the past 40 years, he rarely missed a State Track Meet. Bill and Mary enjoyed dancing and golfing and later in life took up gardening. Bill doing the vegetables and Mary the flowers. Bill took great pride in being the caretaker of St. Mark's Cemetery.
Thankful for having shared his life are his wife, Mary of Lake Andes; his children; Natalie (Tom) Kellner, Las Cruces, NM, Jonathan (Paige), Sioux Falls, Susan (Clifford) Johnson, Lake Andes, and Michael (Gina) of Bennington, NE; 15 grandchildren: Angela, Timothy, Jeffry and Theresa Kellner; Nathan, Keegan, William and Isable Carda; Brieanne and Cliffey Johnson; David Gregerson; and Brayden, Nolan, Corbin and Leighton Carda; one great granddaughter, Mallory Moralas; one brother, Terry (Joyce), Yankton; three sisters: Shirley (Leo) Dvorak and Shari (Gary) Boetel, all of Lake Andes, and Bridget (Arden) Hanson, Elk Point; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Corrine Tronvold; and a brother Duane and his wife Mary Rae.
