Obituary

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, February 22, 2018 at the Assumption Catholic Church in Dante. Burial will be at St. John Catholic Cemetery, rural Wagner, with military honors. Visitation will be 12 noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home in Wagner, followed by a 7 p.m. Wake and Rosary Service at the Assumption Catholic Church. Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home of Wagner is in charge of the arrangements.

William F. "Bill" Slaba, son of Albert and Cristina (Tucek) Slaba, was born August 10, 1921 on a farm in rural Bon Homme County. He died Saturday, February 17, 2018 at the Good Samaritan Society in Wagner. Bill attained the age of 96 years, six months and eight days.

Bill attended a rural school southeast of Tripp. He served his country in the US Army during World War II, serving 3 1/2 years in Africa.

Bill married Gladys Podzimek on September 14, 1948 at the Assumption Catholic Church in Dante.Three daughters were born to their union. They farmed near Tripp until 1950 and then Bill began a trucking business until 1954. Bill and Gladys then moved to the farm 11 miles northeast of Wagner, where Gladys was raised. Bill operated a maintainer blading roads in Chateau Creek and Bryan Townships for seven years. They sold the farm in 1981 and moved to their home west of Wagner until moving to an apartment in 2011. After retirement, Bill continued to help farmers when needed at harvest time. He became a resident of the Good Samaritan Society on December 2, 2016.

Bill was a member of Assumption Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Greer American Legion in Wagner, VFW Post #2966 in Scotland, and Dante Lake Club.

Bill and Gladys began traveling in 1984, and went to all 50 States, nine providences of Canada and four parts of Northern Mexico. Bill will be remembered for his love of farming, fishing and playing cards.

Bill is survived by his wife Gladys of Wagner; three daughters: Bonnie Bradshaw of Garretson, Renee Willert of Chamberlain and Jaclee Slaba of South St. Paul, MN; 4 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Edward (Elsie), Frank, and Alvin (Sylvia); and one sister, Mabel (John) Kronaizl.
